The first two were the Viking probes, and they were stuck in place. The next time was the Pathfinder mission, that had a little rover, but it couldn't do much. These rovers are bigger and better, basically (I saw a picture comparing them to the Pathfinder rover - MUCH bigger). If we see an interesting rock, we can send the rover over to peck at it.
